Russian Drone Barrage Hits Kyiv, Sumy, Dnipro as Merz Arrives for Air Defense Talks

Published Updated

Overnight Russian drone strikes across six Ukrainian regions kill one in Sumy and injure six in Dnipro; German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visits Kyiv to discuss expanded air defense cooperation.

Russian drones struck Kyiv’s Northern Bridge, a medical warehouse in Sumy, and a communications plant in Dnipro early Monday, killing one person and injuring six, as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in the capital for talks on bolstering air defenses.

Overnight, Russia launched 135 attack drones — more than 50 of them jet-powered — across Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Sumy and Zaporizhzhia regions. The barrage hit residential areas and critical infrastructure, causing power cuts in several communities. Emergency crews are responding at all impact sites.

The assault caps a week in which Russian forces have fired over 1,900 attack drones, 1,700 guided aerial bombs and 25 missiles, with jet-powered drones accounting for more than 800 of the total. Ukrainian officials say the escalation demands a stronger international response.

Merz’s visit underscores Germany’s leading role in supplying air defense systems. Both sides are preparing agreements to expand defensive capabilities for Ukraine and Europe, with the chancellor stating that Russia must be stopped collectively.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed condolences to the family of the Sumy victim and thanked international partners for continued assistance.
