Kaczyński Alleges Ukraine Pushed for Joint State with Poland in 2022

Polish Law and Justice (PiS) chairman Jarosław Kaczyński said on Tuesday that Ukrainian authorities allegedly pressed Warsaw to move toward a single joint state in the weeks following Russia’s February 2022 invasion. Speaking at a party meeting, Kaczyński described the reported proposal as an unrealistic demand that Poland could not accept, though he offered no documentary evidence. He framed the episode as a pattern of diplomatic pressure from Kyiv on its western neighbour.

The claim adds to a series of frictions that have marked Polish‑Ukrainian relations despite extensive military and humanitarian cooperation. In recent months, high‑level contacts have continued, including visits by Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski to Kyiv and a letter from Polish President Navrotsky urging resolution of lingering disputes. Both capitals have stressed the strategic importance of their partnership, yet historical disagreements and divergent strategic priorities periodically resurface.

Analysts caution that such allegations could complicate coordination on military aid and refugee support at a time when the two countries remain aligned against Russian aggression. The Polish government has not officially responded to Kaczyński’s remarks, maintaining its public stance of solidarity while upholding national sovereignty.
