A Russian strike on the National Academy of Sciences building in Kyiv injured former National Security and Defense Council Secretary Volodymyr Horbulin and killed his assistant, BBC News Ukraine reported. The blast wave shattered windows in the academy’s offices, leaving Horbulin with minor cuts and contusions from flying glass and overpressure. He was treated on site and has since returned home.
The strike hit the floor directly above Horbulin’s office, where his assistant was working. Preliminary information indicates the assistant died; her name has not been released.
The National Academy of Sciences, Ukraine’s premier research institution, has been repeatedly targeted during the war. A drone attack on the academy’s presidium on September 28 killed one person and wounded four, part of a broader pattern of Russian strikes on civilian infrastructure in the capital.
Authorities have not yet specified the weapon used in the latest attack or the full extent of structural damage. Emergency crews remain at the scene assessing the aftermath.
