UKRNAFTA Starts Installing Gabion Barriers Around Kyiv Fuel Stations

Ukrainian fuel retailer UKRNAFTA has begun erecting gabion structures around its filling stations in Kyiv to protect pedestrians and vehicles from debris caused by Russian drone strikes. The barriers are being placed along roadways and pedestrian pathways surrounding the stations, known locally as AZK.

Engineers say the gabions are designed to contain shrapnel and limit the external blast radius when a drone hits nearby. By keeping fragments inside the perimeter, the barriers reduce the risk of injury to people and damage to cars that may be in the vicinity during an attack.

“This, in turn, will lower risks for pedestrians and vehicles that could be near the site during a hostile attack. We are also preparing additional measures, which we will announce later,” said company head Kukura.

UKRNAFTA indicated that further protective upgrades are under development and will be rolled out across its network in the coming weeks.
