Kyiv to Begin Construction of Reserve Dnipro River Crossings Next Week

Published Updated

Infrastructure Minister Kalashnyk announced that Kyiv will start building reserve crossings across the Dnipro next week, including embankment dams with pontoon sections designed to handle at least half of current bridge capacity, with construction taking up to three months; authorities are also studying rapid-deployment concrete crossings and a tunnel.

Kyiv will begin construction of reserve crossings across the Dnipro River next week as a contingency against potential bridge damage, Infrastructure Minister Kalashnyk announced. The plan calls for the erection of several embankment dams equipped with pontoon sections; these temporary structures must deliver no less than 50 percent of the existing bridges' current throughput capacity. Construction of the dams and their associated pontoon sections could take up to three months to complete.

In addition to the pontoon-based dams, authorities are examining rapid-deployment concrete crossings and the possibility of building a tunnel beneath the river. Specific locations for all proposed crossings have already been determined, according to the ministry.

The reserve crossings are intended to preserve vital transport links across the capital’s main waterway should existing bridges be compromised. The initiative reflects a broader push by Ukrainian authorities to strengthen the resilience of critical infrastructure amid ongoing security challenges. Previous measures, such as temporary traffic halts on key bridges during air raid alerts, have highlighted the vulnerability of existing crossings and the need for redundant capacity to ensure the capital's transport network can withstand potential disruptions.
