Kyiv Lawmaker Proposes Ferries and Bicycle Hubs as Bridge-Failure Contingency

Published Updated

Volodymyr Kreidenko outlines ferry routes, bike hubs, and an odd-even traffic scheme as emergency alternatives if Kyiv’s bridges are destroyed.

Ukrainian People’s Deputy Volodymyr Kreidenko has presented a set of contingency measures for Kyiv residents should the capital’s bridges be rendered unusable, identifying ferries and bicycles as the main alternatives for cross‑river movement.

The plan envisions regular ferry routes operating either between existing river piers or linking directly to metro stations, while pontoon bridges have been considered but are judged insufficient to handle the volume of passengers and vehicles required in a crisis.

To support cycling, dedicated bicycle hubs would be established at strategic points, notably between the Slavutych and Vydubychi metro stations and in the vicinity of the Arsenalna and Livoberezhna stations, providing secure parking and access to bike‑share schemes.

Private car traffic would be regulated by an odd‑even system tied to the final digit of license plates, allowing vehicles with even numbers to operate during even hours and odd numbers during odd hours. Kreidenko emphasized that these proposals remain at the idea stage and have not yet been put into practice.
