Kyiv Eases Bridge Traffic Rules During Air Raid Alerts

Published Updated

Kyiv City Military Administration has updated bridge crossing regulations, allowing unrestricted travel on four major spans while imposing targeted 15-minute closures on two others during alerts.

Kyiv City Military Administration announced revised bridge traffic rules during air raid alerts, effective immediately, seeking to balance civilian mobility with safety. The Northern Bridge, Darnytskyi Bridge, Paton Bridge, and Metro Bridge will operate without restrictions. On the Southern Bridge, traffic from the left bank to the right bank remains unimpeded, while the opposite direction pauses for 15 minutes after an alert begins. The Podilsko-Voskresenskyi Bridge halts movement in both directions for 15 minutes at both the start and end of an alert.

The changes replace earlier, broader restrictions that had fully closed the Southern Bridge and limited the Metro Bridge to a single lane, measures that caused significant congestion. Those prior rules, outlined in early October, also prohibited right-bank-to-left-bank travel on the Paton, Northern, and Podilsko-Voskresenskyi bridges. The new differentiated approach reflects an effort to fine-tune closures based on bridge capacity and traffic patterns.

The Southern Bridge's vehicle lanes have operated alongside the Green Line metro, which resumed normal cross-river service on September 10 after test runs during a yellow alert level. Authorities maintain contingency plans to split metro service if a red alert is declared. The updated regime aims to reduce crowding at shelters while minimizing exposure on exposed river crossings.
