Poland to Deploy Over 1,000 Automated Sirens Along Ukrainian Border

Poland will install more than 1,000 automated air raid sirens near its border with Ukraine, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, citing a shift in Russian tactics that has seen border crossings and nearby infrastructure increasingly targeted by drones and missiles.

Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that Russia has changed its approach, with border crossing points and other infrastructure in the frontier region coming under more frequent attack from Russian unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles. The siren network aims to provide early warning for both civilians and critical facilities.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the region had only about 30 operational remotely controlled sirens at the start of 2024. That figure has since risen to nearly 350, with further expansion planned to reach the target of over 1,000 units. The automated sirens are designed for remote activation and centralized management.

The deployment reflects growing Polish concerns about spillover from the war in Ukraine, particularly after several incidents involving Russian missiles entering Polish airspace and strikes on Ukrainian border facilities close to the frontier. Warsaw has also reinforced air defenses and increased patrols along the eastern flank. Recent NATO responses, including Czech fighter jet scrambles triggered by Russian drone activity over western Ukraine, and repeated SMS alerts to residents in Lublin and Podkarpackie voivodeships during large-scale Russian air strikes, underscore the heightened vigilance along the border.
