Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski Warns Russia of Decisive NATO Response to Any Attack

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski warned Russia that NATO would deliver a swift and massive response to any attack on the alliance, emphasizing the bloc's superior military capabilities. Speaking on the alliance's deterrence posture, Sikorski stated that NATO allies possess a significant edge in combat aviation and modern long-range weaponry, asserting that any Russian strike on member states would provoke a retaliation far quicker and more extensive than the Ukrainian strikes on Russian infrastructure seen to date.

The minister later clarified that his assessment referred specifically to the combined capabilities of European NATO members, even without direct U.S. involvement. The remarks underscore Europe's growing emphasis on autonomous defense readiness amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, where Ukrainian drone strikes have repeatedly disrupted Russian oil refining capacity since 2023.

Sikorski's comments come as NATO continues to bolster its eastern flank. Recent allied air policing scrambles, including Czech Gripen fighters deployed to monitor airspace near Poland's border following Russian drone activity over western Ukraine, reflect heightened readiness. The warning aligns with a broader strategy of deterrence by denial and punishment, even as domestic surveys reveal only half of young Poles trust NATO would honor its Article 5 commitments.
