Poland to Issue Repeated SMS Alerts to Border Residents During Russian Air Strikes on Ukraine

Poland has announced it will send repeated SMS alerts to residents in two border voivodeships during large-scale Russian air strikes on Ukraine, following a night in which border communities received four such warnings.

The Government Security Center said residents of Lublin and Podkarpackie voivodeships will receive multiple text messages whenever Russian aviation conducts mass attacks against Ukrainian targets. On the night of September 8, inhabitants of border districts received four separate notifications, the first arriving at approximately 4:30 a.m.

Authorities emphasized that the alerts are precautionary, triggered by the proximity of Russian missile and drone strikes across the border. Should any Russian military object actually violate Polish airspace, a distinct additional warning will be transmitted immediately to the same population.

The measure reflects Warsaw's heightened vigilance as the war in Ukraine continues to spill over into neighboring airspace. Polish air defenses have been placed on high alert during major Russian barrages, and the government has sought to ensure civilians near the frontier receive timely information.

The SMS system supplements existing air raid sirens and the national Alert RCB platform, which has been used since 2018 to warn citizens of various threats. Officials did not specify how long the enhanced notification protocol will remain in effect.
