Warsaw to Host European Tram Driver Championship Tram-EM for First Time

Warsaw will host the 12th European Tram Driver Championship, Tram-EM, for the first time on September 19. Plac Centralny and the tracks along Marszałkowska Street will serve as the competition venue for the one-day event.

The championship is timed to coincide with European Public Transport Days and marks the 160th anniversary of the Polish capital’s tram network. It will test drivers’ precision in handling multi-ton vehicles, along with their speed and braking accuracy. Organizers expect 26 teams from major European cities, including Prague, Vienna, Barcelona, London, and Kyiv. Host Poland will be represented by Warsaw and Gorzów Wielkopolski, while a special guest team from Melbourne, Australia, will also compete.

Each two-person team must include one man and one woman. Ahead of the main contest, participants will spend a training day at the new Annopol depot. The exact competitive disciplines will be disclosed shortly before the show begins.

Tramwaje Warszawskie currently maintains more than 350 kilometers of track and fields over 450 trams each day. At the end of the championship, Warsaw will pass the hosting baton to the next European capital chosen to stage the tournament.
