Czech Gripen Jets Scramble to Polish Border Under NATO Order After Russian Drone Activity

Czech JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets deployed from their base in Pardubice on Thursday to monitor airspace near Poland's eastern border under NATO orders, the Czech Armed Forces announced. The scramble was triggered by increased Russian drone activity over western Ukraine, which raised concerns about potential airspace violations spilling into NATO territory.

"Due to drone activity in western Ukraine, our JAS-39 Gripen combat aircraft took off from the base in Pardubice to monitor the airspace near Poland's eastern border," the Czech Armed Forces said in a statement. The aircraft operated under NATO's integrated air defense command structure, which coordinates allied responses to aerial threats along the alliance's eastern flank.

The mission concluded without incident. Czech military officials confirmed that no direct intervention was required and the Gripen aircraft returned safely to Pardubice after being relieved by Polish Air Force fighters assigned to the same air policing sector. The Polish jets assumed monitoring duties once the immediate alert period passed.

The deployment underscores the heightened readiness of NATO's eastern members as the war in Ukraine continues to generate cross-border aerial risks. Russian long-range drones regularly traverse western Ukrainian regions adjacent to Poland, Slovakia, and Romania, prompting frequent allied scrambles. Czechia, a NATO member since 1999, maintains a fleet of 14 leased Gripens that participate in the alliance's Baltic and eastern European air policing rotations.
