Internet exchange point representative Frolenkov says three weeks of Russian attacks on Ukrainian data centers could cause outages up to 12 hours, with Kyiv now the primary target before expanding westward.
Ukrainian internet users may face communication blackouts lasting up to 12 hours as Russian forces intensify strikes on critical data infrastructure, according to Frolenkov, a representative of an internet traffic exchange point. For three weeks, Russian forces have systematically targeted Ukrainian data centers and communication hubs, a campaign now focusing heavily on Kyiv before moving westward.
"Now they have seriously taken on Kyiv, next will be Western Ukraine," Frolenkov stated, outlining the geographic progression of the assault. While internet service providers are working to mitigate the impact, he did not rule out significant connectivity disruptions.
Frolenkov advised citizens to prepare by maintaining two SIM cards from different operators and subscribing to two separate home internet providers to ensure redundancy. Exchange points and data centers serve as vital nodes for routing domestic and international traffic, making them high-value targets.
Industry representatives continue to implement rerouting and backup measures, but the scale and persistence of the attacks have raised concerns about the resilience of Ukraine's internet architecture under prolonged bombardment.
