Poland Imposes Strict Probationary Period for New Drivers

A sweeping reform of Polish road-traffic rules took effect on September 3, tightening nationwide requirements for novice drivers. From that date onward, anyone issued a driver’s license is automatically placed on a mandatory probationary period that lasts two years for adults and up to three years for those who pass the test before turning 18.

During probation, new motorists must observe a strict 0.0 per mille blood-alcohol limit and are barred from working as commercial drivers, including any paid passenger transport. For the first six months, drivers under the age of 18 may operate a vehicle only when accompanied by an adult over 25 who has held a license for at least five years.

The penalties for rule-breaking have also been toughened. Two recorded traffic offenses extend the probationary period by two more years, while three offenses lead to automatic license cancellation. Authorities will additionally revoke the license of any new driver who accumulates more than 20 penalty points during the first year or is caught driving while intoxicated.
