Russia Faces Chinese Jet Engine Supply Issues for Drones, Ukrainian Intelligence Reports

Russia is experiencing difficulties procuring Chinese-made jet engines for its drone programs, according to Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR). Deputy GUR chief Vadym Skibitskyi attributed the disruption to measures taken by Ukraine and its international partners.

Skibitskyi stated that Ukrainian intelligence has identified the enterprises and companies manufacturing such unmanned aerial vehicles, including those operating jointly with Chinese partners. He noted that some of these production facilities are situated more than 2,000 kilometers from Ukrainian territory.

The disclosure underscores the expanding reach of Ukrainian intelligence operations targeting Russian defense supply chains. While Skibitskyi did not specify the exact measures employed, the reference to distant facilities suggests a combination of diplomatic pressure, sanctions enforcement, and potentially kinetic or cyber operations against nodes in the procurement network.

Chinese-origin micro-turbojet engines have become critical components in Russian long-range strike drones, including variants of the Lancet and Geran families. Interdicting their supply would degrade Russia's ability to sustain high-volume aerial attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.

Ukrainian officials have previously warned of deepening military-technical cooperation between Moscow and Beijing, particularly in unmanned systems and electronic warfare. The GUR's latest assessment indicates that international efforts to isolate Russia's defense industrial base are producing tangible effects on advanced weapons production.
