Poland's Sikorski: Russian Apology for Mi-8 Incursion Would Defuse Tensions

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, speaking after his address to the United Nations, downplayed the recent entry of a Russian Mi-8 helicopter into Polish airspace, characterizing such occurrences as routine between neighbors. He indicated that Warsaw would treat the matter lightly if Russia offers a straightforward apology.

"As I said during one of my previous speeches, if the Russian side says: 'We apologize, the pilot made a mistake,' we will not make a big deal out of it. But the one who made the mistake must admit their guilt," Sikorski stated.

When asked whether Poland might consider shooting down Russian aircraft in similar future incidents, the minister deferred to military authorities, saying that such operational decisions rest with the armed forces.

The incursion, which occurred earlier this month, prompted a formal diplomatic note from Warsaw and heightened scrutiny of Baltic airspace security. Sikorski's calibrated response reflects Poland's effort to avoid escalation while insisting on accountability.

The remarks come amid Sikorski's intensive diplomatic engagement in the region. Earlier this week, he made an unannounced visit to Kyiv, where he met with former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to discuss air defense needs and Ukraine's EU aspirations, underscoring Poland's sustained support for Kyiv. The episode underscores the fragile state of NATO-Russia interactions, where even accidental airspace violations carry significant political weight.
