Poland says it does not want US nuclear warheads on its territory
Polish Deputy Defence Minister Paweł Zalewski says Warsaw has no plans to host US nuclear weapons, even as it negotiates a larger American military presence.
Poland has no plans to station US nuclear warheads on its territory, Polish Deputy Defence Minister Paweł Zalewski said. He stressed that such an option is not envisaged, even if the United States significantly strengthens its military presence in the country.
Warsaw is currently negotiating with Washington over the permanent deployment of American troops and the possible establishment of several US bases on Polish soil. Zalewski said Washington is interested in a lasting military presence, but the Polish government does not want to rush any decision.
Zalewski did not disclose how many troops or bases might be involved. He said Warsaw wants to wait until the United States completes its broader review of American military posture in Europe before finalizing any long-term basing arrangements.
The talks come amid heightened regional security concerns, but Zalewski made clear that Poland’s focus is on reinforcing the conventional US troop presence, not on hosting American nuclear weapons.
