Germany is readying its medical infrastructure for a potential conflict with Russia, planning to absorb up to 1,000 casualties per day by integrating civilian hospitals and reactivating a Cold War-era bunker.
Germany is preparing for a possible military confrontation between Russia and NATO, with hospitals gearing up to admit up to 1,000 wounded personnel each day, Bloomberg reported. The preparations reflect a broader effort to ensure medical readiness in the event of a large-scale conflict.
According to a Bundeswehr scenario, the country's five military hospitals would quickly exhaust their capacity, prompting authorities to draw up plans for the extensive integration of civilian medical facilities into the casualty reception chain.
Officials also intend to restore a Cold War-era medical bunker designed to accommodate 2,000 people and operate autonomously for 90 days. In addition, selected underground parking garages are slated for conversion into shelters, while hospitals are developing algorithms to manage mass-casualty situations.
In the event of a major war, Germany is expected to function as a primary transit hub for allied troops and a central location for their medical treatment.
