Western media say CIA Director John Ratcliffe made a secret trip to Moscow to caution the Kremlin over possible aggression against Estonia, Latvia, or Lithuania, as concerns grow about Russian action against a Baltic NATO member.
Russia may be preparing a provocation or limited act of aggression against one of the Baltic states, Western media have reported. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are all NATO members, and any such move would risk invoking the alliance’s collective-defense commitments.
Against that backdrop, CIA Director John Ratcliffe reportedly traveled to Moscow on an unannounced visit. Western media say he warned the Kremlin about the consequences of escalating against the Baltic states and discussed Russia’s war in Ukraine, Moscow’s relations with Iran, and Russian support for Tehran. The claim that Russia has already decided to attack Lithuania has not been officially confirmed.
President Donald Trump described Ratcliffe’s trip as “semi-routine,” but the timing of a covert CIA director visit amid heightened tensions with Russia drew significant attention. The reported mission came amid increased NATO aerial-surveillance along the eastern flank and followed the recent arrival of an American C-17 in Moscow, where Ratcliffe reportedly met Russian special-service representatives.
