President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has directed the Cabinet of Ministers and the Security Service of Ukraine to examine a public petition demanding the revocation of the state honor awarded to singer Potap. The petition, authored by Kateryna Taran, gathered the required 25,000 signatures, while a separate parliamentary vote on the matter failed to secure enough support.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has instructed the Cabinet of Ministers and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) to consider a petition calling for the removal of the "Merited Artist of Ukraine" title from singer Potap. The petition was launched by activist Kateryna Taran, who argued that the artist’s public conduct warrants a review of his state award.
The online petition reached the threshold of 25,000 signatures, the minimum required for an official response from the presidential administration. Despite this public backing, a concurrent vote in the Verkhovna Rada on the same issue did not obtain the necessary majority of lawmakers’ votes.
The "Merited Artist" distinction is one of Ukraine’s highest cultural honors, granted for significant contributions to the performing arts. Revoking it would be an exceptional step, reflecting heightened scrutiny of public figures’ alignment with national values during wartime.
Officials have not yet announced a timeline for the Cabinet or SBU assessment. The outcome will set a precedent for how state honors can be challenged through civic initiatives.
