Ukraine's Starokozache Border Crossing with Moldova Shut After Russian Drone Strike

Sep 9, 2026 04:26

Russian UAV attack hits Starokozache checkpoint on Moldova border, killing two civilians and injuring three; Moldova condemns strikes on Ukrainian border zone.

Ukraine's Starokozache border crossing point with Moldova has been temporarily closed after Russian drones struck its infrastructure and adjacent territory, igniting fires, the State Border Guard Service reported. The attack left two civilians dead and three injured, according to the State Emergency Service.

The strike targeted the checkpoint in Ukraine's Odesa region. Border guard officials said unmanned aerial vehicles hit the facility and surrounding area, causing fires. Preliminary assessments indicated civilian casualties before the emergency service confirmed the toll.

Moldova's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the Russian attacks on the border zone in Ukraine. The condemnation comes as the crossing — a key transit point on the Ukrainian-Moldovan frontier — remains non-operational.

Authorities have not specified when the checkpoint might resume operations. The incident marks another escalation in Russian strikes on Ukrainian border infrastructure near NATO and EU member states.
