14 U.S. Senators Urge Trump to Revoke Putin’s G20 Invitation

A bipartisan group of 14 U.S. senators has urged President Donald Trump to revoke an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin for the upcoming G20 summit in Miami, arguing his attendance would legitimize Moscow’s war in Ukraine. The lawmakers, representing both parties, sent a letter to the White House demanding that Putin and other sanctioned Russian officials be excluded from the December 14–15 gathering. "We urge you to change course, revoke the invitation to President Putin and ensure that other Russian officials who are under sanctions and bear responsibility for Russia's war against Ukraine do not participate in future G20 events," the senators wrote.

The legislators warned that allowing Putin to take part would confer unwarranted legitimacy on the Kremlin amid its ongoing invasion, which began in February 2022. They also pressed the administration to maintain economic and political pressure on Moscow.

The appeal comes as Trump has signaled a willingness to engage directly with Putin, including plans for a phone call to press for a ceasefire, and has previously urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to meet Putin in Moscow. However, the Kremlin has expressed low expectations for any breakthrough, insisting on its own terms for ending the conflict. Congressional concern over U.S.–Russia engagement remains high, with lawmakers from both parties seeking to limit diplomatic openings that could undermine Ukraine’s position.
