The Ukrainian government has approved new operating procedures for the national railway network during air raid alerts, establishing distinct protocols for yellow and red threat levels. Prime Minister Koretskyi stated that during a yellow alert, trains will continue to run according to the regular timetable, and passenger boarding and disembarking will proceed normally.
Under a red alert, however, all train departures and passenger boarding will be suspended immediately, and railway staff will direct everyone on platforms and aboard trains to the nearest shelters. The measures aim to balance transportation continuity with civilian safety amid ongoing Russian strikes.
The announcement drew sharp criticism from the Telegram channel Smolii Ukraine, which labeled the decision "another idiocy." The author argued that Russian Shahed drones have repeatedly targeted trains, making it reckless to keep services running even during a yellow alert. "They are smashing trains with Shaheds, yet we will have trains continue to run," the post read, questioning the judgment behind recent safety directives.
Ukrzaliznytsia, the state railway operator, has not yet issued a detailed implementation timeline. The new rules reflect Kyiv’s broader effort to adapt civilian infrastructure to the realities of persistent aerial bombardment, though public debate underscores the difficulty of calibrating risk in an active war zone.
