Fuel Prices Hit Record Highs in Europe as US-Iran Tensions Disrupt Markets

Sep 18, 2026 10:59

European fuel prices reach historical maximums with shortages reported in Germany and France, while US diesel exceeds $8 per gallon amid escalating US-Iran conflict affecting oil infrastructure and Hormuz Strait transit.

Fuel prices across Europe have surged to historical highs, with localized shortages emerging in several countries, according to market analysts. In Germany, gasoline prices have exceeded €2.50 per liter at some stations, while French motorists face fuel outages at certain retail outlets. Across the Atlantic, diesel prices have surpassed $8 per gallon in multiple U.S. states.

The sharp increase follows escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, including reported strikes on Iranian oil refineries, disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and official warnings of further military escalation. These developments have injected significant risk premiums into global crude markets.

Ukraine, which imports approximately 95% of its petroleum products, is directly exposed to the price shock. Domestic fuel costs have risen in tandem with international benchmarks, pressuring consumers and businesses alike.

However, petroleum market expert Serhiy Kuyun notes that benchmark quotations have already retreated somewhat from their peaks. Kuyun suggests the market may be moving toward stabilization, though volatility remains elevated given the geopolitical uncertainty.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, remains a focal point for traders. Any sustained disruption to transit through the waterway could reverse the recent price moderation and prolong the supply squeeze.
