Civilian drone breaches restricted zone near US missile defense base in Poland

A civilian drone breached the restricted airspace around the United States‑operated Aegis Ashore missile defense base at Redzikowo in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, violating the no‑fly zone by roughly one kilometre but never crossing over the installation itself. According to the Polish Ministry of Defence, the unmanned aircraft was under constant surveillance by air‑defence systems and posed no threat.

Instead of destroying the intruder, base personnel contacted the national emergency number 112. Police subsequently located the drone’s operator on the ground. The incident marks the first known breach of the base’s security perimeter since the facility became operational in 2023.

Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz has requested a full report on the response and pledged corrective measures should any procedural shortcomings be identified. The ministry emphasized that the base’s layered defence architecture functioned as designed throughout the episode.

The episode underscores the growing challenge of low‑cost commercial drones for critical military infrastructure on NATO’s eastern flank, a concern that has intensified as Polish forces regularly monitor airspace violations, including recent interceptions of Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea.
