He predicts that programmers, lawyers, sales staff, and customer-support workers will be the first to face displacement, while by the end of the decade AI could seriously compete with humans in construction and hospitality.
Gates argues that about 40 percent of jobs should be deliberately reserved for people—a concept he calls "Human Reserved." These roles include childcare, medicine, education, psychological support, and the judicial system. To slow mass worker replacement, he proposes taxing robots and AI tokens and using the revenue to retrain displaced workers.
Beyond employment, Gates identifies major AI threats: cyberattacks, biological weapons, fraud, deepfakes, and the loss of control over powerful systems. He also warns that AI companions could become addictive, especially for children, and displace real relationships. The most dangerous systems, he says, should be placed under international oversight by the United States, China, and other major powers.
Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg offers a more optimistic view, predicting that small teams aided by AI will soon handle work that currently requires large staffs.
