Poland Accelerates Shelter Construction After Russian Strikes on Border Crossings

Poland conducted extensive civil defense exercises across more than 500 fire stations in the Lublin and Podkarpackie voivodeships, simulating responses to air raid alerts. The drills, held in the country's eastern border regions, come as the government speeds up protective infrastructure development after a series of Russian missile attacks on western Ukraine earlier this month that triggered Polish air defense alerts and repeated SMS warnings to residents of the same border areas.

Interior and Administration Minister Marcin Kervinsky stated that the measures are a direct response to a shift in Russian tactics, which now include regular strikes on border crossing points between Ukraine and Poland. He emphasized that the threat environment has changed, requiring faster deployment of warning systems and shelters.

Authorities are accelerating the installation of air raid sirens in frontier areas and have set a target of equipping 85,000 shelter sites throughout Poland. The program aims to ensure civilian readiness in the event of further cross-border incidents.

The exercises involved coordination between fire brigades, local administrations, and emergency services, focusing on evacuation procedures and public alert protocols. Officials said the drills will be repeated regularly to maintain preparedness.
