The US Army is developing an artificial intelligence base layer for its Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2) architecture, with Austin-based Striveworks building the AI component, according to Army officials speaking to Breaking Defense on Tuesday. The service is preparing to deploy NGC2 at corps level next year, placing particular emphasis on Indo-Pacific operations.
Joseph Welch, head of procurement for command, control, and communications, said the volume of data processed at corps level will increase significantly. New AI tools will help analyze that data, and Welch stated, "We are making progress in this area."
In June the Army announced that Anduril would construct the foundational data layer for NGC2, a digital infrastructure designed to unify battlefield communications and accelerate decision-making through a common software baseline. Striveworks will supply AI models to convert massive streams of sensor data into actionable intelligence. CEO Jim Rebesch said the models can "compress hours of staff work into seconds," noting that modern battlefields generate real-time data from drones and sensors beyond human processing capacity.
The AI layer will optimize model selection for specific tasks while preserving human oversight. Prototypes have already been tested at division level, including with the 4th Infantry Division, confirming the architecture functions effectively in realistic combat conditions. The integration marks a key step in modernizing Army command and control and boosting combat effectiveness.
