Lesya Ulashyi, director of the virtual assets regulation department at Ukraine's National Commission on Securities and Stock Market, resigned following the publication of NABU recordings implicating her sister, former deputy head of the Presidential Office Iryna Mudra, in a money laundering scheme.
Lesya Ulashyi submitted her resignation as director of the department of state regulation of virtual asset markets at the National Commission on Securities and Stock Market (NKTsBFR) after the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) released recordings that feature her sister, Iryna Mudra. Mudra served as deputy head of the Office of the President until her dismissal on August 19. The kinship, previously highlighted by Kyiv Independent, was confirmed by a source within NKTsBFR, though it does not appear in either woman's asset declarations.
Ulashyi's role involved overseeing cryptocurrency market regulation, a responsibility that Kyiv Independent had flagged as a potential conflict of interest because NKTsBFR members are appointed by the president. An expert on virtual assets regulation suggested the arrangement could have allowed the Presidential Office to influence decisions on the crypto market.
On August 19, NABU published recordings that investigators say indicate Mudra's involvement in a scheme to legalize 150 million hryvnias. President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree removing her from her post the same day. Subsequently, the High Anti-Corruption Court imposed a preventive measure of detention with an alternative bail of 20 million hryvnias. Mudra denies any wrongdoing.
