Russia Loses Nearly 3 Million Barrels Per Day of Oil Output From Pre-War Peak, IEA Data Shows

Russia has lost nearly 3 million barrels per day of oil output from its pre-war peak, translating to roughly $100 billion in annual revenue losses at current prices, according to data cited by the International Energy Agency.

Before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in January-February 2022, Russian production exceeded 11 million barrels per day. By August 2026, output had fallen to 8.36 million barrels per day, the IEA reported.

The decline reflects the cumulative impact of Western sanctions, price caps, and the withdrawal of major international oilfield service companies that previously supported Russia's most complex fields. The IEA's monthly oil market report tracks these shifts as part of its global supply assessments.

Analysts note that the production drop has been gradual rather than abrupt, as Russia redirected exports to Asia and deployed domestic technology to maintain flows. However, the loss of Western expertise and financing has constrained investment in new projects and enhanced recovery techniques.

The $100 billion annual revenue gap underscores the fiscal pressure on the Kremlin, which relies on energy proceeds to fund its war effort and social obligations. The IEA continues to monitor Russian supply as a key variable in global oil balances.
