Polish Sappers Erect Border Fortifications at Three Ukrainian Crossings

Polish military engineers from the 4th and 18th Sapper Regiments have begun building fortifications along the Polish-Ukrainian border, providing engineering support to the Border Guard as part of heightened security measures. The work is concentrated at three major crossing points — Dorohusk, Medyka, and Korczowa — where troops are erecting observation and guard posts using HESCO Bastion modular barrier systems.

The deployment reflects Warsaw’s broader push to reinforce physical infrastructure on its eastern frontier. The sapper units are tasked with both constructing defensive positions and ensuring the Border Guard has the technical capacity to monitor and control the frontier effectively. HESCO Bastion units, widely used in military and disaster relief, allow rapid assembly of blast- and bullet-resistant walls, signaling a shift toward more permanent, engineering-grade barriers rather than temporary obstacles.

The Ministry of National Defence has not set a completion timeline, but officials have tied the activity to ongoing assessments of cross-border threats, including irregular migration and potential hybrid operations. The fortifications come amid a period of elevated alert along NATO’s eastern flank, though the ministry has not linked the construction to any specific incident.
