Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Bosacki has warned that placing Stepan Bandera and Roman Shukhevych in Ukraine’s National Pantheon would seriously complicate Kyiv’s integration with the European Union.
In remarks quoted on the Ukrainian Telegram channel smolii_ukraine, Bosacki said Ukraine knows that figures linked to mass killings during the worst period of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), from 1943 to 1944, would raise severe problems for its European integration. He noted the victims included Poles, some Ukrainians, Czechs, Jews, and Roma.
Bosacki was quoted as saying: “Ukraine knows that under the banners of those who killed — by the way, not only Poles, but also some Ukrainians, as well as Czechs, Jews, Roma — that is, the creators of the UPA in the worst period of its activity, in 1943–1944, Ukraine will have huge problems with integration into Europe.”
The statement highlights Poland’s acute sensitivity toward World War II-era historical memory and its potential to affect bilateral relations and Ukraine’s EU accession ambitions.
