Kyiv Hosts Premiere of 'Odyssey ~ Meotida' Blending Homeric Myth and Mariupol Testimonies

Kyiv hosted the premiere of 'Odyssey ~ Meotida,' a groundbreaking theatrical production that merges Homer's classic epic with firsthand accounts from defenders of Mariupol. For the first time in Ukrainian theater history, a European myth and live wartime experience share a single stage.

The play draws on Homer's 'Odyssey' and artistically reimagined testimonies of Mariupol's defenders. Director Ivan Uryvskyi created the staging in collaboration with servicemen of the 1st Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine's Azov Regiment, notably playwright Oleksiy 'Fish' Dorychevskyi.

The production brought together military personnel and theater professionals to transform personal combat narratives into a collective artistic statement. Uryvskyi's direction intertwines ancient narrative structures with contemporary documentary material.

Realization of the project was supported by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine and private partners including Ajax Systems, Bolt Ukraine, Vartis, and Darnytsia. Their involvement underscores a growing convergence of cultural institutions, technology firms, and veteran communities.

The premiere marks a significant moment in Ukraine's cultural response to the ongoing war, demonstrating how classical literature can frame modern trauma and resilience.
