GTA VI Release Could Cost U.S. Economy Over $1 Billion

Economists estimate that the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI may temporarily cost the U.S. economy more than $1 billion as roughly 1.5 million workers skip shifts to play.

The release of Grand Theft Auto VI could cost the U.S. economy more than $1 billion, according to economist estimates.

On launch day, roughly 1.5 million Americans are expected to take a day off or call in sick specifically to start playing the new title immediately. Such a large, simultaneous one-day absence from the workforce could temporarily reduce national labor productivity by around 2 percent.

The disruption is projected to be strongest in the technology sector and among men aged 18 to 30, the group economists expect to account for the largest share of absences.

GTA VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026. The projection measures the value of lost work hours rather than the game's commercial performance.

The estimate suggests that even a single high-profile entertainment release can produce a measurable, one-off decline in national output and labor productivity across a wide range of workplaces.
