German journalist Zhou Jinxin has published an investigative report estimating that between 50,000 and 100,000 Chinese intelligence operatives are currently active in Taiwan, according to findings released this week.

Zhou, a German journalist of Chinese descent who previously served as a Beijing correspondent for Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Der Spiegel, details how Chinese intelligence agencies target active-duty and retired Taiwanese military personnel. The primary objective is to obtain classified information on U.S. weapons systems and defense programs.

The report describes a systematic recruitment pipeline that often begins with innocuous contact on social media platforms such as Telegram and LinkedIn. These initial approaches are then cultivated into long-term espionage relationships through targeted bribery or the exploitation of personal vulnerabilities.
