While Russian command focused on the south and moved reserves toward Kherson, Ukrainian troops prepared a surprise strike against the flanks of the exhausted Russian grouping. On the morning of 6 September, Ukrainian forces on light armor broke into the Balakliia area at high speed, collapsing the Russian defensive line within hours.
The advance created a domino effect. Within two days, Ukrainian units had advanced dozens of kilometres. By 9 September they had partially retaken the key logistics hub of Kupiansk, and by 10 September the Russian Izyum grouping had collapsed.
The operation liberated more than 12,000 square kilometres of territory and approximately 500 settlements, including Balakliia, Izyum, Kupiansk and Vovchansk. Retreating Russian forces left behind hundreds of pieces of usable heavy equipment and tonnes of ammunition. The offensive is described as a textbook example of concealment, speed and intelligence.
