The incident began when the intoxicated man approached the Ukrainian group in a public place and tried to engage them in a discussion about the 1943 Volhynia massacre, one of the most divisive episodes in Polish-Ukrainian history. The tragedy refers to the mass killings of Poles carried out in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia during World War II by Ukrainian nationalist groups, an event that still fuels historical disputes and political tensions between the two neighboring countries. When the Ukrainians refused to participate in the conversation, the man shouted to nearby passersby that Ukrainians were present, the report said. Eight men then set upon the three Ukrainians and beat them.
Polish authorities have detained what they described as the organizer of the assault, who now faces up to five years in prison. The remaining suspects are still being sought by law enforcement.
